Again in 2019/2020 American Airlines closed multiple accounts due to alleged “abuse” of credit card rewards. This is often referred to as Toby’s closure. Part of the shutdown was a lifetime ban from the program, though many people have created new accounts to avoid the ban.
It seems that a new wave of closures has occurred for people who created new accounts (1,2). This has always been a big risk with creating a new account as sometimes the account would be closed but you wouldn’t know until you were at the airport.
