• Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s are offering 3x gas stations on the purchase of Mastercard gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn gas points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they run offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Details of gas points

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off a gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you will get $1 off. If you have 1,500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off a gallon (up to $1.50 off most). Points can be redeemed at Shell partner locations.

Points are it can now also be used on groceries, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

• You have 30 days to choose whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to use them.

• Points are usually available immediately, but sometimes it took a day for them to show up and be usable.

Our verdict

Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well, these offers are even more beneficial. Use a card who earns a bonus in groceries. Stack me Chase Offer for 10% back at Stop & Shop.

Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit on gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also look to put it all on a single card. Also note, some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so make sure you buy the full $2,000 in a single transaction.
