What does Chase consider a lifetime (when you qualify for another bonus)?

Last year Chase added several new languages to the cards (follow up pop up jail). Normally, the language in these offers says something like ‘It looks like you don’t qualify for a bonus on . This can happen if you have already held or received a bonus for this card. Current personal Chase Sapphire cardholders are also ineligible.’ At the beginning of this year We got some clarification on the rules for Sapphire cards saying ‘The new card member bonus may not be available to you if you currently have another personal Sapphire card open, if you previously held this card or received a new card member bonus for this card. We may also take into account the number of cards you have opened and closed and other factors in determining your bonus eligibility.’

American Express has similar language and considers the lifespan 5-6 years. It wasn’t clear if Chase had a similar end date to the language of life or if it was a true once-in-a-lifetime deal. It looks like it’s similar to American Express and you can get the bonus back even if you had it before, but we don’t know the specific time frame yet. A few things to consider:

  • Chase 5/24 rule still applies
  • You cannot be the current cardholder

Data Points

TPG first shared some broad data points and their helpful points were that people who were eligible first applied in 2010-2012 when the Chase Sapphire Preferred was first launched and canceled until 2016/2017 when the Chase Sapphire Reserve was launched.

Sharing your data points

If you want to share your data points, then the following are the most useful:

  • When you were approved for your second CSP (eg we only want data points from people who have been approved since the new language was added and had a Chase Sapphire Preferred in the past)
  • When you first applied and were approved for the card
  • When you cancel your first card

Our verdict

As always, please share your data points so we can get more clarity.
