Not wanting to feel left out after introducing baggage fees last year, Southwest has announced that it will also increase baggage fees by $10 due to rising fuel costs. JetBlue was the first to raise fares, followed by United AND then Delta.
The increased fee of $45 per bag (from $35) will be for tickets booked after Thursday, April 9. Congratulations Southwest on their first rate increase in baggage fees. As mentioned, airlines blame rising fuel costs for these increases, but increasing baggage fees instead of adding a fuel surcharge has the added benefit of not expecting those fees to drop when the price of fuel goes down, and elites/credit card holders aren’t affected.
