Reverse review

Using the application is quite easy:

  • Open the application
  • Choose an offer (the screen shows you the price per gallon and the discount)
  • Pay with your usual credit card and take a photo of your receipt
  • Upload photos to Upside

reverse-gas

Within a day or so of uploading the invoice, you’ll see the cashback available in your Upside account. You can cash out via check or Paypal. Check payments have a $5 minimum while Paypal cash has no minimum. I was able to cash out a small balance of $1 with no problems.

Reverse loan

In addition to cash back on gas purchases at these gas stations, Upside also gives you a credit toward future purchases at the gas station location. These Upside Credits are more generous than the current cash back rebate, BUT they are much more restrictive in use and can only be used for specific items or services at the gas station. You may be able to use the loan for an oil change, for example.

The Application will dictate which goods or services the Credit can be used for. After purchasing the specific item, you will upload a receipt of that purchase and then the Upside Credit will be converted into real money back via Paypal or a check.

A recent purchase of mine at a Sunoco gas station got me 8¢ cash back per gallon on the purchase of about 6 gallons for a total of $0.48 back, plus I got 25¢ per gallon in Upside Credit for a total credit of $1.50. The app gives me two options to use the $1.50 credit: 1) get $1.50 off the oil change, 2) buy merchandise at the gas store and get 20% off the purchase by submitting the receipt. (Tobacco and gift cards are excluded.)

Pay attention to the cashback numbers you see in the app: standard earnings are literally cashback, but Upside Credit earnings have a much more limited use, as mentioned.

Final Thoughts

Uploading bills is always a pain. In this case, if you use a lot of gas and have a large tank, it might be worth using the app and getting a few dollars from each fill-up. If you’re able to easily use revolving credit as well (eg buy groceries regularly or get oil changes at your local gas station), the value proposition is much greater.

They also have a website for the business this is quite interesting if you are reading about their business model.

If you live in one of the participating states, I’d love to hear your feedback about the app in the comments. Is it worth downloading or are they mostly overpriced stations offering uncompetitive discounts?

Please do not share your referral codes in this post. Use this linked post instead.

Hats off to him Maximizing money to make me aware of this app.
